A historic Shinto shrine in Kobe, renowned for its over 1,200-year history and for being a site where athletes and fans, including figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, come to pray for guidance and success.
MK Guide Recommends
Enveloped in greenery that makes it feel far removed from the city, Yuzuruha Shrine stands as a quiet spiritual refuge just minutes from Hankyu Mikage Station. The shrine honors Kumano Okami, whose divine messenger is Yatagarasu, the mythological three-legged crow and official symbol of the Japan Football Association. This area played an important role in Japan’s early football history, as one of the country’s first dominant school teams formed nearby during the Taisho era. Because of this connection, athletes and fans still make pilgrimages here, praying for victory, skill, and guidance. Sacred trees, including a camphor tree over 450 years old, reinforce the shrine’s timeless atmosphere, where faith, nature, and sport intersect. If visiting in May, the annual dashi festival brings the shrine to life, with traditional floats and celebrations adding movement and color to this otherwise quiet sanctuary.
