MK Guide Recommends

Yasaka Koshin-do, formerly known as Daikoku-san Kongo-ji, is a small temple in Kyoto’s Higashiyama Ward associated with the Kōshin folk belief. The temple is best known for its kukurizaru—brightly colored cloth talismans shaped like monkeys—which visitors tie after writing wishes, symbolically restraining worldly desires. These clustered charms give the compact grounds their distinctive visual character. A short walk from Gion, Yasaka Koshin-do is often visited as a brief stop rather than a destination in itself, offering a glimpse into Kyoto’s layered religious practices beyond formal temple and shrine traditions.
