Explore the enduring beauty and peaceful spirituality of Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in central Kyoto.
MK Guide Recommends
Tenryu-ji was founded in 1339 and is one of Kyoto’s most important Zen Buddhist temples, serving as the head temple of the Tenryu branch of the Rinzai school. The site is best known for its garden, designed by Musō Soseki, which features a central pond, stone groupings, and borrowed scenery that align with the forested slopes of Arashiyama beyond. Unlike many temple gardens, its basic layout has remained largely intact for centuries, emphasizing continuity rather than restoration. Designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, Tenryu-ji serves as both a working temple and a visual anchor for the Arashiyama area, offering a measured pause between river, mountain, and town.
