A historic Japanese stroll garden in Kyoto, showcasing teahouses, scenic ponds, and seasonal plants, providing a peaceful escape in the city's center.

MK Guide Recommends

Hidden in plain sight, only a stone’s throw from Kyoto Station, many travelers overlook this garden amid the hustle of arriving and settling into the once ancient capital of Nippon. The garden remains a quiet jewel, waiting to be discovered by those to whom it beckons. Those who enter find tranquil natural landscaping that brings a sense of peace as they look across the pond and spot Kyoto’s modern symbol, Kyoto Tower, peeking through the brush and foliage.

It’s a great place to wander without intention, take it all in without hurry, or stop by while waiting for hotel check-in after dropping off your bags, to breathe in some classical Kyoto scenery and atmosphere. Shōsei-en Garden traces its lineage to 1641, through a land grant from the shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, and spans more than 33,000 square meters, a precarious number, if you ask me.

It suffered destruction over the years, but was revived during the Meiji era into the beautiful display it is today. Come for the cherry blossoms or the autumn maple leaves to enjoy the garden in all its natural splendor and glory.
