One of Japan's oldest temples, known for its five-story pagoda, stunning gardens, and important historical artifacts.
MK Guide Recommends
In the gritty gray Tennoji area of Osaka, Shitennō-ji Temple is one of the oldest temples in Japan, a place with a strong spiritual atmosphere despite its urban surroundings. On the outside, it’s modern and concrete, but within the grounds, it’s zen, spiritual, and peaceful. Established in 593, it was founded by Prince Shōtoku, a legendary Buddhist scholar and influential leader.
On the grounds, you can feel the palpable sense of history. It’s not too crowded, as many travelers don't come to Osaka for the temples but for the urban experience. A fantastic place to break up the frantic, overstimulating sense of modernity while in Japan’s most characteristic city.
There’s also a pond with some turtles!
