Sapporo Nijo Fish Market offers a vibrant culinary experience featuring the freshest seafood and local produce in the heart of Sapporo.

MK Guide Recommends

Nijo Market is one of Sapporo’s great gateways to the sea, a concentrated display of Hokkaido’s marine abundance in the heart of the city. Established in the late 19th-century Meiji period, the market began as a gathering place for fishermen selling their catch directly to locals, and that immediacy still defines the experience today.

Rows of vendors present crab, salmon roe, scallops, and sea urchin in vivid, almost theatrical displays. Colors deepen under the market lights. Ice glistens beneath carefully arranged shells. The air carries the unmistakable scent of proximity to the sea. Though modest in size, the market holds immense cultural weight, with around 15 fisheries and fishmongers continuing the tradition.

Visitors come not only to observe but also to taste. Small counters and nearby eateries transform the morning’s catch into bowls of rice crowned with uni, ikura, and sweet shrimp. Nijo Market captures something essential about Sapporo, a city shaped as much by its northern waters as by the land beneath it.
