A historic Buddhist temple known for its lively festivals, cultural significance, and bustling shopping area.

MK Guide Recommends

One of Nagoya’s most famous Buddhist temples, Osu Kannon traces its origins to 1333 and was relocated to its current site in 1612 by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu during the construction of Nagoya Castle. Destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in 1970, the temple now stands with bright red pillars and sweeping beams, making it one of the city’s most photogenic landmarks.

The main hall houses a revered image of Kannon, the Buddhist deity of compassion, and remains an active place of worship rather than a static monument. Incense drifts through the courtyard as visitors offer prayers and draw fortunes beneath the eaves.

The bustling Osu Shopping District surrounds the temple on all sides, creating a contrast between sacred space and everyday commerce. Locals gather here regularly, and flocks of pigeons circle the bird-feeding area, adding motion to a setting that balances devotion and daily life in equal measure.
