One of Japan’s most impressive aquariums, celebrated for its creative displays and varied marine life exhibits.

MK Guide Recommends

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan shattered my preconceived notion that aquariums are boring and turned me into a lifelong fan of the nautical world. When it first opened, it was the world's largest aquarium, and today it remains home to over 30,000 creatures. Visitors spiral downward into the depths around a massive nine-meter central tank that features the star attraction, the whale sharks, gentle giants with oddly lovable smiles. Man, they warm my heart just thinking about them.

It’s a fantastic spot for families, a surprisingly great choice for a romantic date, and honestly enjoyable for just about anyone. The ticketing system leaves much to be desired, so don’t show up without prebooking unless you want to risk being turned away. If this is your first aquarium in Japan, it may also be the first time you hear people saying “oishii-so” to the fish as they swim by.

Jacques Cousteau, eat your heart out.
