A central park in Sapporo, known for its seasonal festivals and green spaces.
MK Guide Recommends
Odori Park forms the living spine of central Sapporo, a green corridor that quietly divides the city into north and south. Established in 1871 as a firebreak during Sapporo’s early frontier years, it has since softened into something far more humane, a 12-block stretch of trees, lawns, and open sky running through the heart of the business district.
More than 92 varieties of lilac and elm line its wide promenades, offering shade in summer and bare elegance in winter. Office workers eat lunch here. Couples sit in silence. Visitors drift without agenda. The park adapts to the season without losing its composure. In February, it becomes the monumental stage of the Sapporo Snow Festival, where towers of sculpted ice rise from the frozen ground. Spring brings the Lilac Festival, filling the air with fragrance. Summer arrives with the YOSAKOI Soran Festival and one of Japan’s largest outdoor beer gardens. Autumn closes the cycle with harvest stalls and evening light that lingers longer than expected.
At the eastern edge stands the Sapporo TV Tower, watching over it all since 1957, a quiet sentinel marking the place where the city still comes to breathe.
