Visit Nijo Castle to experience the splendor and history of Japan’s feudal period, a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site.

MK Guide Recommends

Nijō Castle was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. The complex is best known for Ninomaru Palace, whose interiors feature richly painted sliding doors and the famously engineered “nightingale floors,” designed to chirp underfoot as a security measure. Surrounding the palace, the landscaped Ninomaru Garden combines ponds, stones, and carefully framed views to reinforce the authority and aesthetics of the early Edo period. Designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, Nijō Castle offers a clear architectural and political counterpoint to the city’s religious sites.
