Nanzen-ji is one of Kyoto’s most important Zen temple complexes and the head temple of the Nanzen-ji branch of the Rinzai school. Founded in the late 13th century on the site of a former imperial villa, the grounds unfold gradually, from monumental structures such as the Sanmon gate to quieter sub-temples and gardens. The site is also known for its Meiji-era brick aqueduct, which cuts unexpectedly through the temple precinct and reflects Kyoto’s layered history. With its scale and variety of spaces, Nanzen-ji offers both architectural presence and areas of stillness, rewarding visitors who explore beyond the main approach.
