A traditional villa from the late 19th century in Kyoto, showcasing a peaceful Japanese garden with a pond and teahouse, exemplifying Meiji-era architecture.
MK Guide Recommends
Murin-an Garden was built by Japan’s two-time prime minister, Yamagata Aritomo, and offers a full garden experience in a beautifully compact setting. There’s a main tatami room for viewing the manicured landscape, a tearoom serving sweets, and flowing natural water that creates a calming Zen ambiance. The canal even runs from Lake Biwa in Shiga (an underrated gem that MK services, shameless plug, but Shiga deserves more love).
The grounds also include a Western-style house showcasing refined Meiji-era design, a period when East truly met West.
