Moerenuma Park is a stunning blend of art and nature, featuring expansive green spaces and unique installations by renowned artist Isamu Noguchi.
MK Guide Recommends
On the outskirts of Sapporo, Moerenuma Park unfolds across 188.8 hectares as a complete work of art, conceived and realized by Isamu Noguchi, the Japanese American sculptor, designer, and landscape architect. Completed in 2005 near the end of his life, it is Noguchi’s masterwork, a park designed not as a collection of objects but as a single unified sculpture meant to be entered, crossed, and experienced.
The scale reshapes your sense of distance. Wide lawns give way to geometric hills. Glass, water, and stone appear with deliberate placement. The Glass Pyramid rises with quiet authority, reflecting sky and season. Elsewhere, the wading pool, playground, and open fields merge into the composition, dissolving the boundary between recreation and art.
Movement becomes essential here. Walk or cycle across the grounds to fully absorb its intention. Climb the Tetra Mound. Stand atop Mount Moere. Watch the city recede behind you. As sunset settles across the landscape, the park reveals its deeper purpose, not simply as urban design but as a place that alters perception itself. A must-visit location while in Sapporo.
