A large, peaceful garden encircles the Kyoto Imperial Palace, rich in history and natural splendor.
MK Guide Recommends
Kyoto Gyoen National Garden is a large public park in central Kyoto that surrounds the Kyoto Imperial Palace and occupies what was once an enclosed district of aristocratic estates. Today, the grounds are open and informal, with broad gravel paths, wooded areas, and open lawns used daily by local residents and visitors. Scattered throughout the park are traces of former court residences, offering quiet historical reference points rather than formal attractions. Kyoto Gyoen is especially valued for seasonal change—cherry blossoms in spring, deep shade in summer, and color in autumn—and functions less as a sightseeing destination than as a place to slow down within the city’s historical core.
