A hidden temple glowing with autumn color—Kyorinbo invites visitors into a stone garden of crimson maples and quiet spiritual depth.

MK Guide Recommends

Tucked into the foothills near Azuchi, Kyorinbo Temple is a little-known Tendai Buddhist retreat that becomes luminous each autumn. Founded in the 7th century and once linked to Prince Shōtoku, the temple is most celebrated today for its serene stone garden, moss-covered grounds, and vivid seasonal foliage. During peak November weeks, the temple opens for limited public viewing, and the inner courtyard is transformed by hundreds of maple leaves glowing red and gold. Lantern-lit evening visits add a layer of dreamlike stillness. Despite its modest scale, Kyorinbo blends spiritual history with painterly precision, making it a must for foliage chasers and seekers of hidden beauty.
