Explore the vibrant Kobe Chinatown, Nankin-machi, a lively hub for Chinese cuisine, culture, and shopping.

MK Guide Recommends

Established in 1868 after the opening of Kobe Port to foreign trade, Nankinmachi is one of Japan’s three premier Chinatowns. By day, it buzzes with food stalls serving savory Chinese specialties, incense wafting, mahjong parlors, and shops filled with souvenirs. By night, the atmosphere shifts, and the lantern-lit streets take on a dreamlike quality, suspended between worlds. Despite its importance, the district remains compact and approachable, never overwhelming. Even without eating, it rewards a slow stroll and invites you to absorb the layered cultural energy that defines it.
