A historic Buddhist temple famous for its wooden stage, picturesque scenery, and the Otowa Waterfall.
MK Guide Recommends
Kiyomizu-dera is one of Kyoto’s most recognizable temples, best known for the wooden stage that extends from its main hall, offering views of the slopes of Higashiyama and the city beyond. Founded in 778, the temple takes its name from the Otowa Waterfall below the hall, where visitors drink from three streams traditionally associated with health, longevity, and academic success. The large temple grounds include multiple halls and pagodas, as well as Jishu Shrine, historically linked to matchmaking and relationships. Designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, Kiyomizu-dera is especially popular during the spring cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, when evening illuminations highlight the complex and its surrounding landscape.
