Kinkaku-ji, formally known as Rokuon-ji, is a Zen Buddhist temple in northern Kyoto, best known for the pavilion whose upper two floors are covered in gold leaf. Originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the site was converted into a temple after his death. The pavilion reflects Muromachi-period aesthetics, with each level featuring a distinct architectural style associated with courtly, warrior, and Zen traditions. Visitors follow a set path around the Mirror Pond, where the pavilion’s reflection is most prominent, moving through carefully maintained gardens that emphasize visual balance and controlled viewpoints. Kinkaku-ji is designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
