A tranquil nature reserve in the heart of Tokyo featuring educational exhibits and a serene escape from the city.

MK Guide Recommends

The Institute for Nature Study is a protected natural reserve in Minato Ward, preserving a rare fragment of Tokyo’s original woodland and wetland ecology. Spanning roughly 20 hectares, the grounds serve as both a research site and a public refuge, with walking trails passing through forest, marsh, and pond environments largely untouched by urban development. More than 1,400 plant species and thousands of insects inhabit the reserve, making biodiversity the central attraction rather than curated landscaping. Interpretive signage supports quiet learning without disrupting the setting. Operated in connection with the National Museum of Nature and Science, the Institute offers an immersive encounter with Tokyo as it existed before the city—measured, living, and intentionally preserved.
