A peaceful Buddhist temple located in Kyoto's Arashiyama area, famous for its lush moss garden, tranquil bamboo grove, and colorful maple trees.

MK Guide Recommends

Metaphysical and moss covered, Gioji Temple is surrounded by a bamboo grove and maple trees that erupt into vibrant color each autumn. These trees are frequently mentioned in the tragic love story of The Tale of the Heike, which tells of Gio, a dancer for whom the temple is named, who fell in love with the Heike clan leader, Taira no Kiyomori. After he ended the relationship, she retreated here to become a Buddhist nun and to find solace in the wake of heartbreak.

Within the quaint, by temple standards, thatched roof main hall is the image of Dainichi Nyorai, the Buddha of Light. At first, many might be put off by the size and lack of a main attraction, but those who sit and listen, slow down, clear their minds to the best of their ability, and disconnect from modern sentiment will start to see why many have come here since the 12th century to find solace in this quiet location, where the real subtleties of nature can be appreciated and tuned into. Welcome to the real Kyoto. Enjoy your stay.
