A historic Zen Buddhist temple famous for its stunning gardens and the iconic Silver Pavilion.
MK Guide Recommends
Ginkaku-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto’s Sakyo Ward. Built in 1482 by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa as a retirement villa and later converted into a temple, the site is closely associated with the aesthetic culture of the late Muromachi period. Ginkaku-ji is known for its restrained design and early expression of wabi-sabi, emphasizing quiet balance over ornament. Visitors follow a set walking route through the grounds, passing a dry sand garden known as the “Sea of Silver Sand,” a carefully maintained moss garden, and the understated Silver Pavilion, with elevated viewpoints offering a measured perspective of the temple complex and surrounding area.
