Genkyuen Garden is a beautifully maintained daimyo garden built in 1677 by the Ii clan, designed to complement the nearby Hikone Castle. Created in the kaiyu (strolling) style, the garden features a peaceful pond with four islands and elegant arched bridges, surrounded by seasonal plantings that change from cherry blossoms in spring to vibrant maples in fall. Teahouses nestled into the landscape offer quiet spots for reflection and great views of the castle's reflection on the water. Unlike larger imperial gardens, Genkyuen retains an intimate, local charm—quiet, contemplative, and closely tied to Japanese aesthetics.
