MK Guide Recommends
Fushimi Inari Taisha is a major Shinto shrine in southern Kyoto dedicated to Inari, the kami of rice, agriculture, and prosperity. Founded in 711, the shrine is best known for the network of vermilion torii gates that form covered paths across the forested slopes of Mount Inari. Visitors pass through the main shrine precinct, including the Romon Gate, before continuing along a looping trail lined with smaller sub-shrines and fox statues, which serve as Inari’s messengers. The walk to the summit and back typically takes two to three hours, with intermittent viewpoints over Kyoto along the route. The shrine grounds are open around the clock, making it possible to experience the paths early in the morning or late at night, when the atmosphere is quieter.
