Enjoy artisanal sandwiches and pastries in the charming atmosphere of Freundlieb, a German bakery housed in a former church.
MK Guide Recommends
With a history dating back over 100 years and housed in a former church, Freundlieb stands as one of Kobe’s most atmospheric bakeries. The Gothic-style structure now houses a shop and café under one roof, beloved for its cakes, sandwiches, and pastries. It makes an excellent breakfast stop in the Kitano-cho area. Bakers prepare bread and pastries one by one in the adjacent facility, filling the surrounding streets with a sweet aroma, perhaps even a trace of the Holy Spirit, given the setting. The architecture alone makes it worth the visit, with vaulted ceilings and old-world character reflecting the international influences that helped shape Kobe’s identity.
