A prominent Zen Buddhist temple complex in Kyoto, featuring numerous sub-temples and famous for its peaceful rock gardens and rich cultural history.

MK Guide Recommends

A sprawling complex of Japanese Zen Buddhism where hours are needed to explore every nook and cranny of its 23-hectare grounds, even longer if you plan to go full monk and bathe in Zen stillness in one of the many meditative gardens designed for that exact purpose. The temple is off the tourist trail, north of the city, allowing space to breathe and stillness to take hold. The simplicity of the massive complex can subtly shift your mood if you allow it to, revealing trembling and contemplation toward the unknown as you walk paths filled with quiet geometry, with subtle nuances meant to stir the conscience.

The grounds were established in 1315 by the esteemed monk Daitō Kokushi and have been the epitome and showcase of rich Japanese Zen Buddhist history, making Daitoku-ji Temple a must visit destination for those with even a passing interest in the philosophy, which has built up quite an allure in the West over the past century or so, or simply for its traditional architecture and tranquil Japanese atmosphere away from the crowds.

Also, there’s a bonsai tree that’s over 800 years old. Very cool!
