A charming café located inside a century-old machiya townhouse in Kyoto's historic Miyagawa-cho district, serving traditional Japanese breakfast and lunch in a cozy atmosphere.
MK Guide Recommends
An intimate café run by a lifelong Kyotoite in Miyagawachō, one of Kyoto’s five geisha districts. Stepping into the 100-year-old machiya is akin to being welcomed into someone’s home, or slipping back into the past, where your grandmother serves a home cooked meal in a parallel life. That’s the vibe of the place. Cafe Roji-Usagi is famed for its Japanese breakfasts, which visitors rave about, along with its lunch and coffee offerings.
The owner puts her all into making sure everyone leaves happy, with one goal in mind: hearing customers proclaim, satisfied, “That was delicious.” Step back outside onto the traditional street, and you may even spot a maiko passing by, momentarily forgetting what year it is. This is about as traditional and authentic as it gets, without being invited to a family dinner at a stranger’s home to indulge in recipes passed down from generation to generation
