A cozy, wood-paneled bar in Kyoto celebrated for its handcrafted cocktails, intimate setting, and attentive service.
MK Guide Recommends
A once well kept secret, Bar Rocking Chair is now legendary, hidden away in the deep recesses of Kyoto’s backstreets. A longtime local favorite and soon to be a favorite for all who visit. The wood paneled room and ambiance feel like the offspring of the Wild West and Meiji era Japan.
The bartenders here are the real deal, and in typical Japanese fashion, they put everything into perfecting their craft. Think classic white shirts with black waistcoats. This is not your TGIF flair from back home. Conversation is encouraged, and the more you share, the more they tailor a drink to your liking and personality.
Owner Kenji Tsubokura is one of the top bartenders in Japan, not just considered among the best, but genuinely one of the best. His awards speak for themselves. Yes, there are actual rocking chairs to sip your cocktail on, though no spittoon is included.
Arrive early or call in advance, as entry isn’t guaranteed. The secret can no longer be contained. If you visit one Western style bar in Kyoto, make this your top priority. Drink responsibly
