A picturesque mountain park where visitors can engage with wild monkeys and take in sweeping views of Kyoto.
MK Guide Recommends
Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama is a hilltop wildlife park in Arashiyama, reached by a short but steady hike from the riverside area. The park is home to a free-ranging troop of Japanese macaques, which visitors observe at close range under clearly defined rules to limit human interference. At the summit, an open viewing area offers wide views across Kyoto, while controlled feeding takes place from inside a small enclosure, reversing the usual zoo dynamic. Part nature walk and part observation site, Iwatayama works best for visitors comfortable with a bit of exertion and interested in seeing wildlife in a loosely managed natural setting rather than a conventional park.
