A UNESCO World Heritage site in Ueno that features an extensive collection of Western art masterpieces.
MK Guide Recommends
The National Museum of Western Art stands at the edge of Ueno Park as Japan’s principal institution for the study and display of Western art. Designed by Le Corbusier, the building is a canonical example of modernist museum architecture and part of a UNESCO World Heritage–listed group of his works. The museum’s collection spans the Renaissance through the early twentieth century, anchored by sculptures from Auguste Rodin and complemented by paintings from European masters, including Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso. Interior circulation follows Corbusier’s signature ramp system, guiding visitors through galleries with deliberate rhythm and clarity. More than a repository of artworks, the museum functions as an architectural manifesto—where space, movement, and light are integral to the experience of art itself.
