Sapporo Clock Tower is a historic symbol of the city, offering a glimpse into Sapporo’s past through its charming architecture and museum.

MK Guide Recommends

The Sapporo Clock Tower stands as one of the city’s oldest surviving buildings, a modest wooden structure that has become one of its most enduring symbols. Built in 1878 in an American colonial style, the tower reflects the pioneering influence that shaped Sapporo’s earliest years, when the city was emerging from frontier terrain into something recognizable.

Originally constructed as a drill hall for the Sapporo Agricultural College, now Hokkaido University, the building was closely associated with Dr. William S. Clark, the institution’s first vice principal and one of the key figures in Hokkaido’s development. The clock itself, imported from the United States and installed in 1881, continues to mark time with quiet consistency, its mechanism still operating more than a century later.

Inside, a small museum preserves this origin story through photographs, documents, and the preserved interior of the hall. Standing within its wooden frame, you feel the distance between past and present narrow. Outside, surrounded by the modern city near Odori Park, the Clock Tower remains steady, a reminder of how recently Sapporo began and how far it has come.
