Tokyo's most historic and prominent Buddhist temple situated in the vibrant Asakusa district.

MK Guide Recommends

Senso-ji is Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, founded in 645 and dedicated to Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion. The approach begins at the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), where the scale of the city gives way to ritual and procession, followed by Nakamise-dori—a long, narrow shopping street whose stalls trace a line between commerce and pilgrimage. Beyond the Hozomon Gate, the main hall and five-story pagoda anchor the precinct, while the neighboring Asakusa Shrine introduces a parallel Shinto presence within the same grounds. Active year-round and closely tied to the surrounding neighborhood, Senso-ji functions less as a static monument than as a living complex—one where worship, festival, trade, and daily movement continue to overlap as they have for centuries.
